Colorful Mediterranean Kitchen
Project type
Kitchen Remodel
Location
Berkeley, CA
The original kitchen in this late mid-century hills home was dark and cramped. In partnership with Ecohome Improvement (Berkeley) and Alfredo Morales Construction, we opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room, allowing light to pour in and create the missing connection to the house’s spectacular canyon view. We took a color prompt from the client’s rustic, turquoise cabinet and existing terra cotta tile floors. Red birch cabinets complement the warm, watery blue field tile and colorful, custom Cuerda Seca decorative backsplash. With a cue from the vintage stained glass, blue liner tiles were used to integrate the window and wall. These tiles are locally produced and made from a high recycled content clay base with glazes free from heavy metals. Quartz counters are inert, requiring no toxic sealants that offgas. Solid redwood shelves need no glue and were sourced from within five miles of the jobsite from a fallen tree!
